India’s biometric-identity database Aadhaar now counts more than a billion registered users, and is turning into a bankless, cashless payment system for all. All businesses in India can leverage on Aadhaar and the India Stack to facilitate digital KYC authentication. Aadhaar’s mandatory use for authentication has led to a nationwide debate about privacy and a decision from the Supreme Court.

Due to the lack of funding and resources, India has developed a culture of frugal innovation, launching reliable low-cost products and services adapted to needs of low-and middle-income countries, with efficient delivery process to reach users further, faster and more economically. Frugal innovation has transformed the healthcare industry, as well as transportation in India (eg: Tata Motors’ small car Nano).
